when you turn it on nothing happens at all when you connect to a stream

It won't play when you connect to the stream (it must be configured on server side), intro file that you configure in RadioBOSS is only played when RadioBOSS first connects to the server - that is, it "sends" intro file as a part of the stream right after it connects.
