If the playback sound is choppy, then you should increate playback buffer size in Settings->Playback->Main soundcard.

You can configure how microphone is turned on/off: in the menu click Settings->Options, select the Inputs tab, there are settings: fade in, fade out. By setting higher values, the MIC will be turned on and off softly.
