Determining which remote pc is playing thru the server?

So, lets say I have one computer, playing shuffle, at the office.  Then I get home and I want to do a show, from my home laptop.

How can I make the server cut off the office pc, while I'm doing my show, from home?  And then give back control to the office computer, to continue shuffling, over night?

It's easier to implement on server side. If you use Icecast, then you should set up mount point fallbacks, you'll need 3 mount points
/stream is the mount where listeners will connect, set fallback to /home
/home - the mount point you use when broadcasting from home, fallback to /office
/office - for your office PC

In this case, you can anytime connect to /home and listeners will be switched to your live broadcast - automatically.

I think that would let Brother take over, then when he is done, either home (if broadcasting) or office would take over?  If Brother forgets to quit broadcasting, I guess then I would delete his mountpoint, to get back control?

Yes, correct. You can disconnect the source from server's Admin page when needed, or make yourself a higher priority mount point.

I dont see where to set the "fallback"

It's in Centova control panel: Settings / Mount Points / Fallback Mount. You need to have AutoDJ disabled for this mount point, otherwise it will not let you edit the Fallback settings.

I've read a little about icecast vs shoutcast.  Seems like, for publicity, Shoutcast is the way to go.  But, I'm starting a fairly niche station, so maybe i dont care about that as much.

Is it possible to have this sort of set up on Shoutcast?  Something like it?

AFAIK Shoutcast doesn't have such a feature. If you want such kind of functionality and easy configuration, then Icecast should be used.

I switched to icecast... is it me or is icecast buggy?  my stream is all laggy, cant get to some of the server pages like http://s2.radioboss.fm:8294/  Not much is different, on my end, from using the shoutcast server and it was smooth, never a hiccup.

It works fine here. Note that shoutcast and icecast provide the same stream quality.

I understand that the stream quality is the same.

There seems to be two parts to icecast, user name or port number. Any of the streams, which use the user name work fine.  The ones with port# 8294 do not.

opens in MPC-HC for me and works great.

all stuttery and way lagged, up to 1.5 minutes.

The player works great.

This uses the 8294 stream to set up the jPlayer.  all stuttery and way lagged


With Shoutcast, all 4 of the above (with my other account info, dcassid01 or 8361)  work great. I have them both broadcasting, simultaneously.


Also, logout doesnt seem to work.  i have to clear cookies to logout of user.radioboss.fm

Just tested this link, and it works fine here. It could be something specific to your computer.

After a bit of goofing around... now http://s2.radioboss.fm:8294/stream wont play, gives me "The file you requested could not be found"
--update, now that link works.  It's  hard to pin down.  I will say Chrome works better than FF. (latest of each)

However, I put:

http://dougcassidy.com/ice/ - works on chrome, stuttery on FF

Ugh, i dunno.  Seems like every other version of FF is a buggy pos.  But, anyway, there is for sure a difference in ice/shout.

Both streams play fine here - I've never seen that Icecast was a problem (it's actually more stable than shoutcast, according to our internal data). It's something specific to your system - I'd suggest you to try on another computer. I just checked reports: we sell almost equal amounts of Shoutcast and Icecast servers and the amount of support request for both server types is almost equal too - if Icecast had such a problem (it's a major problem for sure), there'd be lots of support requests about it

I use both Icecast and Shoutcast and they are both roughly the same in quality of steaming and continuity  8)

I tried my two test players ^ on my other computer (win vista, same hardwired network) and got the same thing, stuttery icecast.  However, on  my phone, with cell data (not wifi) they work the same. 

So, now i'm thinking my network either doesnt like icecast or doesnt like that particular port.

Do we have a public list of icecast via radioboss.fm I could try?

The stream works fine here, too. It's something to do with your Internet connection, or computer - it can be antivirus software that interferes with the stream.
You were trying streams from one of our US servers. Here's EU server to try: http://eu.radioboss.fm:2199/tunein/bazudkad8.pls (just a random radio station from the server).
